December 2006
Its that time of the year when we release our next vintage and offer it to our private mailing list first. This year we are particularly excited as the 2004 vintage of Luddite contains grapes from our farm for the first time, and is the start of greater things to come.
Luddite continues to flourish around the world, we have just finished extensive marketing trips to Europe, and America for the first time. I am pleased to boast that we are listed on some of the top restaurants around the world, on the general listing of all the Gordon Ramsey group of restaurants.
These marketing trips can be quite hazardous as a recent tasting in the north of Germany got out of hand and it was decided that a swim in the Baltic sea was needed to wake up, this was at the end of October but being full of Luddite Shiraz I survived comfortably.
Luddite was also featured on Wine TV on a recent visit to the US. You can view it by clicking here.
One of the viewers likened Gary and myself with Schwarzenegger and DeVito in Twins and went to the trouble of creating a special poster for us.
I am certain that you will enjoy this latest offering from Luddite Wines as it is already finding favour whenever I show it to international buyers and press.
From this year we will also be packing the wine to private customers in wooden crates.
P.S Those of you lucky enough to have the 2000 vintage in your cellars. It is drinking absolutely beautifully and is a truly seamless wine.
The 2004 vintage was characterized by long periods of warm weather during ripening, resulting in full fruit driven wines with ripe tannins.
Grapes were selected from 4 vineyard sites, Malmesbury, Helderburg, Bottelry and for the first time our own fruit from the Luddite farm in Bot River.
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with 4hrly pump overs. We used cooler fermentation temperatures (24C) to preserve and retain all the fruit complexity of this vintage. We gave 60 days post maceration on the skins to ensure a good tannin structure to balance the fruit.
Malolactic fermentation took place on the skins were after the wine was pressed and put into 80% French Oak and 20% American Oak barrels. 25% of these barrels were new with the rest being 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill.
The wine remained in barrels for one year after which the wine was filtered and bottled.
Price per bottle is 190.00 all Inc.
